International Day of Persons with Disabilities- December 2021

1 billion people, which is approximately 15 percent of the world’s 7 billion population lives with some form of disability, with a majority of living in developing countries (UN, 2021). The 3rd of December is the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development.

The NeuroDev Kenya team, in partnership with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and Mariakani Subcounty Hospital, carried out a mass disability assessment and registration in Kaloleni Subcounty, Mariakani Ward. The exercise saw 127 children and adults with disabilities assessed by a rehabilitation team, referred to care and registered with the NCPWD. The event was aimed at addressing the communities’ lack of means to access health and social services where registration is a primary pathway to accessing these services.
